Abstract

The play Heroes and Saints by Cherrie Moraga is the story about a fictitious town in California called McFarland. For the residents of McFarland, the main economic source of income is working the fields or vineyards that are sprayed with pesticides. Also, the majority of the people of the town live in a subdivision where their drinking water is contaminated by chemicals. In Moraga’s play the protagonist is “Cerezita,” who is a disembodied head. Like her, there are many children who have been born with birth defects and/or even die because of pesticides. In her play Moraga, presents the exposure of pesticides as one of the main problems farm workers have to face as part of their daily lives in order to survive in this country. In my paper, I am analyzing how Moraga imagines different kinds of situations that prevent these people from getting environmental justice. My research explores different scenes from the play that make a strong representation of the lack of social justice. For social change making injustice visible is the best way to find environmental justice. In Heroes and Saints, Cherríe Moraga demonstrates her social preoccupation about pesticides and their effects on farm workers by making the absence of environmental justice visible in society.
