Artist's Statement
My work examines the contemporary manifestations of being raised in a conservative evangelical region of the country while not subscribing to those ideologies. Being a queer person raised with said conservative evangelical values, it creates an inner turmoil which I then reveal to the viewer. The goal is to both show the viewer the past and present and how they interact with one another. I show the viewer unbiased and uncensored stories from my childhood and current life. I have no intent on self healing or pushing blame, the work attempts to reach people who have had similar experiences and show that they are not alone and their feelings aren’t “wrong.” Simultaneously, I hope that people with no connection to the work can gain an understanding of other perspectives on issues like Christianity or politics and why others may feel so strongly about a seemingly arbitrary topic.
A hurtle in talking about taboo topics is always getting the viewer to engage. I use a strategy I like to refer to as making “Trojan Horses,” where I create work that upon immediately seeing does not scare the viewer away with sensitive topics but instead only reveals the ideas within the piece after the viewer has already engaged. I keep the visuals abstract or seemingly disconnected from the main idea until the viewer has already engaged and then they discover the connection between the visual and the conceptual.
