Artist's Statement
In my work I'm reconnecting to my estranged Ukrainian family and culture through interdisciplinary processes. By creating soft sculptures, I search for a way to connect with lost traditions and the memory of my family. My search for identity started by associating memory and family relationships to textiles. By excavating my family photos and soft materials, I associate touch and memory together to create hybrid objects. These sequences of images and material processes become a way of creating a sense of memory into physical forms. Throughout Submergence I am revising and utilizing Ukrainian craft to resist Russia's propaganda about the invasion of Ukraine. Excavating my identity and memory becomes a tool to defy Russia's erasure of Ukrainian culture.
