Artist Statement

Imagine having hundreds of ants crawling on your neck and face, or being so thoroughly tangled in underwater plants that you can't break free and drown.

Adornment is often about the experience of both the wearer and the viewer, and presentation. This adornment represents two of my greatest fears; ants and long lake plants. My intent was to create something that was simultaneously disturbing and intriguing. My fears are largely irrational. By creating this work, these irrational fears are made real.

I am tired of being afraid.

I am no longer allowing my fear to rule me. Focusing all my mental energy on these specific fears has helped me to learn that my true fear is having no control, but I have control of this work and I will use it to continue to be less afraid.
