Artist Statement

Identity, representation and constructed reality are recurring themes within my work. As an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe, I aim to confront, through painting, the repeatedly generalized and stereotyped caricatures of Native Americans. The common archetype has a tendency to eclipse and pigeonhole diverse cultures of Indigenous populations into one generic identity. The large figures in the paintings are intentionally isolated, further emphasizing the concept of otherness. The flat backgrounds act not only as a device to compress the negative space, but also allude to the omitted or veiled history that is lost when false representation is unknowingly accepted as truth.
