Abstract

The Energy, Economy and Environment (E3) Project focuses on waste stream reduction and energy efficiency improvements at three local microbreweries. The objectives of the project are: 1) to re-purpose the waste generated during the brewing process; analyses of the brewing process waste streams were conducted in order to reduce the waste delivered to the local landfill and to ease the load on local wastewater treatment plants; 2) to reuse processed ingredients such as grains, hops, and yeast as animal feed, fertilizer, and compost accelerants; and 3) to decrease energy use by optimizing lighting, HVAC, insulation, glycol systems, cold storage, and water heating – all energy-intensive elements of the brewing process that were identified through energy efficiency audits.
