Abstract
Prior to the 1950s, individuals in the United States with chronically disabling psychiatric illnesses were hospitalized. The hospitalizations took place for years or entire lifetimes in facilities less conducive to rehabilitation than to forced isolation and control (Stein & Test, 1980).
