The purpose of our project was to educate community members of all age groups to provide them with a basic knowledge of the fundamental workings of the human body, with specific emphasis on skeletal muscle physiology and cardiovascular physiology. It is our hope that members of our target audiences will use this information for future self-directed inquiries into human physiology with regard to their own bodies. Regardless of their age, everyone can decide to eat healthier and live a more active lifestyle. With the knowledge we provided the community, we hope they will appreciate that a healthy lifestyle is paramount to maintaining optimal functions of the major organ systems.

The purpose of HEP is to help migrant and seasonal farm workers who have worked in an agricultural job for at least 75 hours, and their children, who are 16years or older and have at least an 8th grade skill level in reading and math, to enhance socioeconomic mobility through education by providing an opportunity to take advantage of federally-sponsored GED training and tests. HEP also provides suitable lodging, meals, and health care for the duration of the student’s time in the residential program, as many of the students would otherwise be unable to attend. The learning goals for Service Learning in this class include: Gaining a more profound comprehension and awareness of the Hispanic language and culture, serving the Boise community employing the Spanish skills learned at BSU, expansion of vocabulary and skill in communicating in Spanish, interact with people from backgrounds that may be different from that of the service learning student, and providing a way to get the student significantly involved in the affairs of the local community.

I also got to spend a lot of time with the children. ¡Muy divertido! The learning goals of my service project with Head Start include: to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Hispanic language and culture, to serve the Boise community, to know the community and interact with people from other countries, and finally to help create an international community where different cultures and languages can thrive together

Because Shakespeare holds such a prominent position in English-speaking world culture, it is important to open and expand access to understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of Shakespeare to a constituency as wide-ranging as possible. To achieve this goal, Service-Learning students in ENGL 345 – Shakespeare’s Tragedies and Histories in Spring 2010 partnered with Lowell Elementary School for a fun and educational after-school program Over six weeks undergraduates in ENGL 345 taught a group of fourth through sixth graders about Shakespeare primarily through directing the elementary-school students in a shortened version of The Tempest

Service Project: As a group we conducted research on 5 different areas that each addressed a different social issue relevant to the LGBT population. Our hope is that the research we have done will significantly help The Community Center in several different ways like educating the mass population, use our research as “talking points” within the LGBT population, and also for future funding through gathering more memberships or possible grant proposals. Learning goals: To gain specific experiences relevant to supporting the understanding and appreciation of civic engagement as well as bridging the gap between psychology (theory and research) from the academic realm and community application between academic psychology and the “real world.”

We found that participants were in favor of after-school programs and we also found that they think after-school programs were beneficial. Even though we didn’t specifically ask the participant “what part of development do you think after-school programs benefit a child or adolescent,” we think it is safe to infer that the participants view after-school programs and/or activities as beneficial to development in general. Future research is still needed to evaluate future improvements that can be made in after-school programs.
