Abstract
Shape frequency distributions of phytolith assemblages have provided information for paleoecological reconstruction. Currently, there are no accepted methods for investigating corresponding patterning in phytolith sizes. Outlined here is a high-resolution analytical technique for characterizing size distributions, using flow-programmed field-flow fractionation. Results indicate discrete size distributions in different ecological contexts.
