Artist's Statement

This series of images asks the viewer to consider the significance of snapshots as cultural signifiers of belonging and acceptance. By rephotographing snapshots of my American and Russian families, I ask the viewer to consider the typologies of experience, and the similarities and differences, that gave form to everyday life and its representations for those living under the two Cold War powers. In the context of the personal archive, snapshots are understood as records of our private lives, chronicles of personal events and experiences. In this project, I have chosen to approach the images as objects of collective memory, seeing them as glimpses into the private lives of strangers, where one might nevertheless recognize oneself in familiar, and familial, rituals.
